DIY Auto Safety Kit

Surprisingly, many people do not have any sort of safety kit in their car, often relying solely on roadside assist. Roadside assist is a wonderful service, however, there are so many situations a car kit is all one needs – as I’ve discovered in my own travels. There is nothing worse than having an issue with your car in a dark, isolated area that has no cell service or that could be easily remedied if the proper tools were available.

The auto safety kit we’re giving away is a good start but should be added to. What I’m about to suggest may seem a touch extreme but could be a life saver (I’m thinking about all those people stranded on the Coquihalla overnight this past winter).  Here’s a quick DIY kit list:

  • 3.6 metre jumper cables Four 15-minute road flares
  • Two quarts of motor oil
  • 3 litres of antifreeze
  • First-aid kit (equipped with bandages, gauze, gloves, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, instant ice and heat packs, scissors and a pain reliever)
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Extra fuses
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Vice grips
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Tire inflator
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Rags/paper towels
  • Duct tape
  • Spray bottle containing washer fluid
  • Pocketknife
  • Ice scraper
  • S.O.S. banner
  • Non-perishable energy bars
  • Bottled water
